Challenges Facing the Indigenous Afar People

The indigenous Afar people in Ethiopia are one of the most marginalized minority ethnic groups in Ethiopia. They do not receive the same attention or benefits as other major ethnic majority groups of Ethiopia. The difficulties facing the indigenous Afar people in Ethiopia are summarized below:

  • Scarcity of clean drinking water causing water-borne diseases
  • Short life expectancy
  • High infant and maternal mortality
  • 1 in 5 children die before their 5th birthday
  • One of the most underdeveloped, neglected, and marginalized regions of Ethiopia
  • Basic medicine is scarce
  • For serious treatments or operations, Afars must travel over 430 miles to the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa
  • Not a single general hospital in the entire Afar region
  • High illiteracy rate (approximately 80%), given the limited number of public primary schools
  • High youth unemployment

How We Help!

The Afar Oasis Foundation’s goal is to improve the economic, education, and health of the underserved indigenous minority Afar people in Ethiopia. We believe one of the most effective methods of achieving our purpose is to fund and support the indigenous minority Afar tribal citizen leaders at a grassroots level. These tribal leaders live in these underserved communities and experience the same challenges their tribal citizens face. Afar tribal leaders will be our partners.

By aiding Afar tribal citizen leaders, we can supply them with tools and resources that they can, with their direct knowledge of and influence in their communities, effectively spearhead our goal of improving the life of the minority Afar people. In doing so, we aim to improve the economic, education, and health of the underserved indigenous minority Afar people in Ethiopia.
